In this E-BOOK, you will find everything you ever wanted to know about what goes into creating the aircraft cabin experience when you fly. How do airlines decide the shape and style of the seat, amount of legroom, type of cushioning, functionality of dining tables, and the feel of the whole interior while keeping in mind passenger health and safety and the demands of the flying environment? Design teams face many challenges in the layout of such a tight space, and the solutions and design ideas will surprise you at every turn.

Cover of the First Edition (Hardback)

The First Edition of JETLINER CABINS (ISBN 0-470-85165-1) was published in Hardback by Academy Press of John Wiley & Sons Inc. in 2003. The book was an expansion of the author’s portfolio of articles about the air travel experience and passenger accommodations specifically, published in Aircraft Interiors magazine between 2000 and 2002. The book’s original 16 core Chapters focused on: Product Branding, Passenger Experience, Cabin Maintenance and Marketing Challenge. JETLINER CABINS was a hit with critics and readers, especially in the airline industry. ’For anyone interested in airline engineering, design, branding, from lighting choices to even the colour of airline seats, this is a definite upgrade,’ said Peter Greenberg, at that time Travel Editor for NBC’s Today Show, and ’Clay’s book makes for fascinating reading and looking’ according to Airways Magazine.

The Second Edition (ISBN 0-470-01933-6) was published in Paperback in 2006. Revisions for this edition included a supplement covering high-efficiency new-generation aircraft: the Airbus A380, the Boeing B787 Dreamliner, the Bombardier CSeries (subsequently the Airbus A220), and the Embraer E-Jets. ’You won’t find a more comprehensive look at aircraft interiors anywhere else’ said Aviation For Women, and ’The new updated edition of this unique book is beautifully illustrated and written with great knowledge and understanding of the airline industry,’ according to AirGuideOnline.com.

Cover of the Third Edition (E-BOOK app)

As frequent flyers traded paper for digital, the Third Edition (ISBN 0-991-41011-4), with updated title JETLINER CABINS: Evolution and Innovation, was released in 2014 as an E-BOOK app for Amazon Kindle, iOS, and Android devices. The E-BOOK app contained everything from the print editions, as well as a wealth of new material, such as a chapter on sustainability and ’green’ cabin innovations. Information on the legendary supersonic Concorde joined a series of aviation Case Studies on topics ranging from the glamour of Braniff Airways and the glory days of Pan Am to the importance of accessibility for travellers with special needs. It also featured a collection of curated Picture Galleries presenting over 6,000 vivid images. In a review for Inflight magazine, Steve Lodewyke said, ’It has been immensely comforting to plot a route through an extraordinary book which charts the development of the modern cabin environment in great detail… Each chapter is assiduously illustrated with full-colour photography throughout, including easy-to-scroll Picture Galleries and App Videos.’

The Fourth Edition (ISBN 0-979-8-218-33203-7), an interactive E-BOOK for use with e-reader apps and devices, builds on previous editions with updated Chapter content to reflect the constantly changing jetliner cabin interior environment. It offers new Case Studies on the storied Boeing B747 and on how airlines responded to the challenges of Covid-19. The text has been redesigned to make use of the native capabilities of a range of personal electronic devices, such as indexing, keyword search facilities and cross-references. This interactive E-BOOK provides web-links to over 500 organizations mentioned in the work, and the collection now of over 8,000 images is catalogued across 20 Picture Galleries.
